TOYOTA PRESS RELEASE
06 November 2008
HILUX LIFTS TOYOTA BEYOND 200,000 SALES
• HiLux the top seller in October
• Toyota sells 200,000 vehicles for fifth year in a row
• Australian market "remarkably resilient"
• Industry on target for one million sales - for only the second time
• Commercial-vehicle sales at record levels
Toyota's HiLux was Australia's best-selling vehicle in October as overall demand for the company's cars and trucks continued at record levels.
The market-leading HiLux helped Toyota pass 200,000 new vehicle sales for the year so far - the first time any company has reached this total prior to November.
Toyota's overall tally of 202,511 for the 10 months to October 31 is up 3.8 per cent on the same period in 2007. Market share has risen one percentage point to 23.4 per cent.
Toyota is the only company to have passed 200,000 vehicles sales in a year - a feat it has now achieved for five consecutive years.
Senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said the success of HiLux and other Toyota vehicles showed that businesses - particularly in the resource and agriculture sectors - were continuing to purchase.
"Toyota's sales of commercial vehicles are up almost 18 per cent this year to a record of more that 98,000," Mr Buttner said.
"Industry-wide sales of light commercial vehicles are also running at record levels - up around 4.5 per cent.
"In fact, the entire Australian new-vehicle market has been remarkably resilient during the tight economic conditions of recent months.
"Total sales this year are running close to the record levels of last year and will exceed one million for only the second time on record.
"That is in stark contrast to other countries, such as the United States, where sales last month were down more than 30 per cent on the previous October.
"In Australia, we have a sharply defined division in buying sentiment with continued strong business sales on the one hand and lower consumer confidence on the other.
"This dichotomy between business and private consumers means we are not caught up in the brutal downturn being experienced elsewhere.
"Another positive for Toyota customers is that our dealers are well placed to continue providing finance solutions for buyers," Mr Buttner said.
October was the second time this year HiLux has topped the sales charts. In April, HiLux became the first utility vehicle to take market leadership in Australia.
HiLux sales of 3,892 vehicles in October were ahead of Holden Commodore on 3,810 and Toyota Corolla on 3,497.
For the 10 months to the end of October, Corolla (40,255 sales) and HiLux (36,356) are at record levels. Corolla is within 1,100 customers of being Australia's most popular car.
Toyota Yaris and the locally manufactured four-cylinder Camry and V6 Aurion are also among the top 10 selling vehicles in 2008.
So don't drive yourself round the bend... Drive straight to Wazza's !
